Cancun vs. Riviera Maya: which is right for your wedding?

The geography

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are both on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, separated by about 45 minutes of highway driving from Cancun International Airport. Cancun's hotel zone is a dense strip of resorts along a narrow barrier island. The Riviera Maya extends south from Cancun for about 80 miles, with resorts spread through areas like Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum.

Both regions are served by Cancun International Airport, so flight access is essentially identical.

What Cancun does better

  • Resort density and choice — more properties at more price points within a smaller area
  • Airport proximity — most Cancun hotel zone resorts are 15–25 minutes from the airport, which matters when 80 guests are arriving across multiple days
  • Value — competition between resorts keeps pricing competitive, particularly in the 4-star category
  • Large group infrastructure — the biggest Cancun resorts are built to handle large wedding groups in a way that most Riviera Maya properties are not

What the Riviera Maya does better

  • Atmosphere — more jungle, more nature, more of a sense of being somewhere rather than in a resort corridor
  • Intimacy — smaller properties with higher staff-to-guest ratios are more common
  • Variety of experiences — cenotes, Mayan ruins, and boutique towns like Playa del Carmen and Tulum are accessible in a way they aren't from the Cancun hotel zone
  • Photography — the natural settings in the Riviera Maya often produce more varied and interesting wedding photography

How to decide

The honest answer is that your guest count and your vibe matter more than the geography.

If you have 80 or more guests, Cancun is almost always the right choice. The logistics of managing a large group — transfers, room block size, resort capacity — work better with Cancun's infrastructure.

If you have 40 or fewer guests and want an intimate, nature-forward experience, the Riviera Maya opens up a set of properties that simply don't exist in Cancun's hotel zone.

Best for most couples: Start with Cancun for the conversation, and we'll tell you if the Riviera Maya makes more sense for your specific situation.
