Cozumel sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world. For wedding groups where diving and snorkelling are important, there is no better base in Mexico. Visibility in the water around Cozumel is consistently excellent, particularly from January through April.
San Miguel, Cozumel's only town, has a genuine local character with independent restaurants, a relaxed central plaza, and a waterfront that feels nothing like a resort strip. The island's car-free ferry arrival and golf-cart transport give the destination a distinctly unhurried quality that large resort corridors cannot replicate.
Cozumel is 45 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen, which means couples can choose to base their guests there and take the ferry across, or stay on the island itself. The island also has its own small airport with direct connections from Houston and Dallas, giving West Coast and Texas guests a particularly convenient option.
When is the best time to get married in Cozumel?
November through May is the ideal window, combining the most reliable weather with the best underwater visibility for snorkelling and diving. December through March is peak season. Water visibility is at its best from January through April, which matters for couples whose guests plan to dive or snorkel during the wedding week.
The island has some hurricane exposure during the August through October window. September is the highest-risk month. Cozumel's position in the Caribbean means it is generally exposed to similar weather patterns as Cancun and the Riviera Maya, so the dry season window applies equally here.
How do guests get to Cozumel for a destination wedding?
Most guests fly into Cancun International Airport and either take a direct puddle-jumper flight to Cozumel Airport (approximately 20 minutes) or travel to Playa del Carmen by shuttle or taxi and take the passenger ferry (approximately 45 minutes). Both routes are well-established and reliable.
Cozumel also has its own international airport with some direct US connections, primarily from Houston and Dallas on United. For couples with a significant proportion of Texas guests, this direct route removes the Cancun transfer entirely. What a gorgeous resort! From the swings at the bar to the numerous pools… Many thanks to Zandra and Vacationeeze for planning such a dream vacation to El Dorado Maroma in Playa del Carmen last November! It was a beautiful location and the organized events were perfect! We had a delicious dinner on the beach that was beautifully decorated with flowers and lights… just magical! We quickly decided we didn't want to do a local wedding, so we started looking up YouTube videos of destination weddings. We found Jack and fell in love with him. We loved how he was a no nonsense type of guy that wasn't trying to sell anyone on anything, he was just stating facts and his knowledge. Is Cozumel family-friendly?
Yes. Cozumel Palace is a well-established family-friendly all-inclusive and the island's snorkelling and reef activities are accessible to children. The town of San Miguel is safe and easy to navigate with families. Cozumel is not as built-out with kids' club infrastructure as a Cancun mega-resort, but it handles families well at a more relaxed scale.
