Why Mexico

Why couples choose Mexico for their destination wedding

Direct flights from almost anywhere in the US

Most major US cities have multiple daily direct flights to Cancun, with Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta well-connected from the West Coast. Your guests are not piecing together connections or burning vacation days in transit. Everyone lands the same day, transfers are short, and the week starts immediately.

All-inclusive resorts that handle almost everything

The ceremony, reception, food, open bar, and accommodation are bundled into one package. Many resorts include the wedding itself at no charge when your group books a qualifying number of rooms. You are not coordinating a dozen separate vendors. The resort team handles the day and our team handles your guests.

Warm weather in every season

The dry season runs November through April, giving you a long reliable window to work with. Even outside peak season, temperatures stay in the low 80s and rain is typically brief and contained to the evenings. You are not gambling on the weather the way you would be with an outdoor wedding at home.

How much does a Mexico destination wedding cost?

Jared BenoffTravel advisor

How much does a destination wedding in Mexico cost?

Mexico is the most cost-flexible destination wedding country, with most couples spending between $7,000 and $25,000 on the wedding itself. Smaller intimate ceremonies start around $5,000, and large fully customised celebrations with 100+ guests can run $50,000 or more.

The biggest cost drivers are guest count, resort tier, and how much of the wedding runs through the resort's included package versus custom vendors. Most all-inclusive resorts in Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and Puerto Vallarta offer a complimentary basic wedding package once a minimum number of guest room nights are booked. From there, upgrades for premium decor, private receptions, live music, and additional guest counts are billed separately.

Per couple, all-inclusive resort stays in Mexico typically run $250 to $700 per night depending on tier and season. November through April is peak pricing, and the Riviera Maya tends to sit slightly above Cancun at the same tier. Pacific coast destinations like Cabo San Lucas can run higher at the luxury end.

Which part of Mexico is right for your destination wedding?

Mexico has two distinct wedding coasts. The Caribbean side is the most established region, with the largest concentration of resorts built specifically for weddings and direct flights from almost any US city. The Pacific side offers a different aesthetic, more dramatic coastal landscapes, and West Coast flight access.

On the Caribbean coast, Cancun is the entry point with the broadest resort selection and the highest volume. Riviera Maya is more design-led and intimate with the strongest adults-only options in Mexico. Playa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres are smaller, quieter, and more exclusive. Cozumel suits diving-focused couples.

On the Pacific side, Cabo San Lucas is the premium choice, with luxury resorts at the tip of the Baja peninsula. Puerto Vallarta has more local character and authenticity. Riviera Nayarit just north of Puerto Vallarta is the upmarket, design-forward Pacific option.

What couples say about their Mexico wedding

Things to do in Mexico for your wedding guests

Chichén Itzá day trip

One of the Seven Wonders of the World is a two-to-three hour drive from Cancun. Most resorts and tour operators offer guided group day trips, making this an easy and genuinely memorable excursion for your wedding party — especially for guests who've never been to Mexico before.

Cenote swimming

The Yucatan Peninsula's cenotes — natural freshwater sinkholes — are accessible on day trips from Cancun. Ik Kil and Gran Cenote near Tulum are among the most spectacular. Many tour operators include cenote visits as part of a Chichén Itzá day trip.

Isla Mujeres ferry trip

A short ferry from Puerto Juárez takes guests to this tiny car-free island just off the coast of Cancun. Quieter, more laid-back, and genuinely beautiful — perfect for a wedding week day trip away from the hotel zone.

MUSA underwater museum

One of the most unusual attractions in Mexico — over 500 sculptures installed on the ocean floor, accessible by snorkelling, diving, or glass-bottom boat. Perfect for adventurous wedding guests.

El Arco boat tour

The iconic rock arch at Land's End is one of the most photographed landmarks in Mexico. A sunset boat tour around the arch and along the coastline is a must for any wedding group in Cabo — the light at golden hour here is extraordinary.

Xcaret eco-theme park

Xcaret is a natural theme park built around underground rivers, cenotes, and Mayan ruins along the Riviera Maya coast. One of the most popular group excursion options in the region — accessible for all ages and energy levels.

Mayan ruins at Tulum

A two-hour day trip from Playa del Carmen takes your guests to some of the most significant Mayan archaeological sites in the world, dramatically perched above the Caribbean Sea. Many tour operators offer guided group trips — a great way to give guests a cultural experience alongside the beach time.

Snorkelling and diving

Cancun sits on the edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest coral reef system in the world. Day trips to Isla Mujeres or Cozumel offer some of the best snorkelling and diving in the Caribbean.

Nightlife in the hotel zone

Cancun's hotel zone has one of the most well-known nightlife strips in Mexico — Coco Bongo, Mandala, and dozens of bars and clubs within walking distance of most major resorts. For wedding groups who want a night out together, this is a natural option.

Old Town and Malecon walk

Puerto Vallarta's cobblestone old town and seafront malecon give wedding groups a sense of Mexican street life that resort-only destinations can't offer. The malecon sculptures, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the local market are all within walking distance.

Whale watching

From November through March, humpback whales migrate through Banderas Bay. A whale watching boat tour is a genuinely memorable excursion that most guests will never have done before.

Mexico destination wedding FAQs

Is Mexico a good place for a destination wedding?

Mexico is consistently the most popular destination wedding location for US couples and has been for over a decade. It combines easy flight access, warm weather year-round, a huge range of all-inclusive resorts at different price points, and a well-established wedding industry that makes both the logistics and the legal side straightforward. For most US couples, it is the natural first conversation.

Is a marriage in Mexico legally valid in the US?

Yes, a legal Mexican marriage is recognised in the US. However, the process for a legal ceremony in Mexico requires apostilled birth certificates, a premarital blood test conducted in Mexico within 15 days of the ceremony, four local witnesses, and a civil registry appointment. Most couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in Mexico and legalise at their local courthouse before or after travel, which takes about 15 minutes and is equally valid.

When is the best time of year for a Mexico destination wedding?

November through May is the ideal window. December through March is peak season with perfect weather but higher prices and popular dates filling up quickly. April and early May offer excellent weather at shoulder-season rates. June through October is hurricane season and not recommended, particularly September and October which are statistically the rainiest months across most Mexican resort regions.

What is the best area in Mexico for a destination wedding?

Cancun is the most accessible and best-value option for most couples, with the highest resort density, most direct flights, and the widest price range. The Riviera Maya is better for couples who want a more intimate, nature-forward feel with cenotes and jungle backdrops. Cabo is best for couples who want dramatic Pacific scenery and reliable year-round dry weather. Puerto Vallarta suits couples who want a genuine sense of place beyond the resort gates.

Do you need a tourist visa to get married in Mexico?

US citizens do not need a visa to enter Mexico as tourists. You receive a tourist card (FMM) on arrival which covers stays of up to 180 days. No additional visa is required for a symbolic or legal ceremony. Most other nationalities can also enter Mexico visa-free for tourist stays.

Can non-US guests attend a Mexico destination wedding?

Yes. Most nationalities can enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days as tourists, including guests from the EU, UK, Canada, and Australia. Guests from some countries may need to apply for a visa in advance. We advise on this as part of the planning process to make sure all your guests can travel without issues.

Is Hawaii more expensive than Mexico for a destination wedding?

Yes, significantly. The average destination wedding in Mexico costs between $10,000 and $20,000 for the event itself (with guests covering their own accommodation separately). A comparable Hawaii wedding typically costs $25,000 to $50,000 or more. Resort rates, vendor costs, and the absence of the all-inclusive model all contribute to the higher price point.

Is a symbolic ceremony in Mexico legally valid?

A symbolic ceremony itself is not legally binding in Mexico or in the US. However, most couples complete their legal marriage at a local courthouse before or after travel, typically a 15-minute process that requires no ceremony. The symbolic ceremony at the resort is then the meaningful, celebratory event. The combination is fully valid, widely recommended by wedding planners, and what the majority of our clients choose.

Is Costa Rica more expensive than Mexico for a wedding?

Generally yes, particularly at the luxury end. The Guanacaste luxury properties like the Four Seasons and Andaz command higher rates than comparable Mexican all-inclusives, and the all-inclusive model is less prevalent in Costa Rica which means guests pay more per item. That said, mid-range Costa Rica options are competitive with Mexico on price.
